Project Overview

Missouri Southern State University partnered with Shadow + Light Creative to produce a mini-documentary highlighting the Biomedical Sciences program and the opportunities available to students through the university’s new Roy Blunt Health and Life Sciences Building. Centered around Biomedical Sciences faculty member Dr. Alla Barry, the film showcases the hands-on learning experiences, advanced facilities, and student-focused instruction that prepare graduates for careers and continued education in the health sciences.

Cinematography & Techniques

The production combined interview-driven storytelling with cinematic visuals captured throughout the Roy Blunt Health and Life Sciences Building. Filming included classroom instruction, laboratory environments, student interactions, and access to the cadaver lab, providing an authentic look at the program’s educational experience. A combination of controlled interview lighting, shallow depth of field, and purposeful camera movement helped create a polished visual style while maintaining a natural and credible feel. Careful attention was given to audio quality, composition, and environmental details to reflect the professionalism of both the program and its facilities.

Visual Storytelling

Rather than focusing solely on facts and statistics, the documentary uses personal perspective and real-world experiences to illustrate the impact of the Biomedical Sciences program. Dr. Barry’s passion for teaching serves as the foundation of the story, while students and classroom activities demonstrate how concepts move from textbook to practice. Footage from the cadaver lab and specialized learning spaces reinforces the program’s commitment to experiential education, giving prospective students a meaningful glimpse into what their academic journey could look like.

The Final Result

The finished mini-documentary presents Missouri Southern’s Biomedical Sciences program as both academically rigorous and highly accessible. By combining compelling interviews with authentic classroom and laboratory experiences, the film highlights the value of hands-on learning, faculty mentorship, and state-of-the-art facilities. The result is a powerful recruitment and awareness piece that helps prospective students envision their future in the health sciences at Missouri Southern State University.
