Project Overview

Missouri Southern State University partnered with Shadow + Light Creative to produce a narrative short film that reflects the student experience while supporting the university’s expanded mission, Explore boldly. Care deeply. Impact globally. Rather than creating a traditional promotional piece, the goal was to tell a grounded, character-driven story that feels honest, relatable, and true to campus life. The film follows a freshman student navigating uncertainty and growth, allowing the mission to surface naturally through lived experiences instead of direct explanation.

Cinematography & Techniques

Production leaned into a warm, brand-first visual approach while maintaining a natural and immersive feel. Real MSSU students and instructors were cast in the film, with scenes staged in actual dorm rooms and classrooms to preserve authenticity. Lighting was designed to feel soft and inviting, with several scenes using a booklight setup to create gentle, diffused illumination that wraps naturally around the subject. Camera movement played a key role in shaping tone, with handheld operation introducing subtle instability that mirrors the main character’s emotional state. The result is a visual style that feels human, present, and slightly unsettled in the right moments.

Visual Storytelling

The story unfolds through small, personal moments that reflect the uncertainty many students feel as they begin their journey. Instead of stating the university’s mission outright, the film allows it to emerge through action, relationships, and environment.
